StevenLiChen.com is a personal blog that recounts the interest of Li Chen (known otherwise as Steven Lee, or stevenlichen in the cyberspace) who presently works as a student consultant (at the Institute of Online Education, Beijing Foreign Studies University, better known as BeiwaiOnline), a freelance English teacher, and an English-Chinese translator/interpreter.

Naturally, you can expect to find TESOL (Teaching English to Students of other Languages) related discussions on this site. Such arguments will go deeper when Li Chen pursues his MA TEFL in Department of Linguistics and English Language, Lancaster University in the fall of 2007.

As well, Li wishes to reveal his life in the UK as an overseas student — photos, reflections and videos will be abundant so be sure to check back regularly.

Well, if you are interested in China, and willing to exchange ideas with Chinese people, YOU HAVE FOUND THE RIGHT PLACE! Stevenlichen and Martin Yau (a Hongkonger, former international business executive) host a weekly talk show within the BeiwaiOnline education system. The show aims to encourage free expression in English (an oral English practice session by nature); it has no set topic and welcomes friends from all over the globe. Should you feel like joining the show and becoming an honoured guest speaker, please leave a message here .

hi, i’m the one who commented on your youtube a few weeks ago and dissapperead……kind of feel sorry that i didn’t do anything yet.. anyaway, i think i ‘ll be a regular guest from now on, post things that i think related to language learning. u might not know, having such a forum could really be a good support for your future study. i noticed that u r going for a master of tefl in Lancaster. uni in the coming sep.oh, i need to say sth about myself, i’m currently in birmingham university, study exactly the same thing, MA tefl.
personally i think your forum could be a good research platform for your future reseach (esp. assignments). but it’s a hard job to keep it running and involve more people. at first i thought it was all designed by yourself, but not after i found a free software can do it…that’s good, convenient, easy to catch. but don’t u feel it isn’t that much easy to view as a guest or memeber. i can see that u r trying to include a lot of resource there and catagorise them into sections. but leaners could be confused by that look, they are eaqually positioned and u don’t have a piont(a slient feature ) there, because there are too many. .i had spend quite some time to figure out diidferent sections and i’m still not clear, because some content are overlaped. may be try to simplify several of them. these are all just my personal perspective, but i guess wouldn’t hurt to tell. anyway, if u have anything want to know about here, feel free to email me…

michele: What a nice surprise to hear from you again! No wonder I have some incoming traffic from Birmingham, it was you! :-) Glad that you’ve made your way here as this website has just been up and running for three days.

With the new web hosting service, I can easily set up a new forum for monitored research. Also, as I do consulting work at BeiwaiOnline, attendance should not be too much of a problem.

How about you and I co-host a forum for ESL students? Since you’ve been studying TEFL, what are appropriate, research-intensive sections for a TESOL forum?

I very much look forward to working with you in the near future.

    3. stevenlichen Says:

One more thing, Michele, you might have found the posts in the TESOL forum have not been updated for a few weeks. This was due to the local prevention of the IP range of the forum’s server. People in China could not get access to it for at least 20 days.

One thing led to another, I purchased a web hosting service and created this blog.

    4. michele Says:

hi, i’m so sorry for those bothering junk mails! nothing can do with it,they even got into my uni.mailbox.

i think co-host a forum is a good idea. right now, i’m working on dissertation. Having discussed with my supervisor,we both think that the area of using online-video in learners autonoumous study is a interesting topic.so,i decided to do it.I guess, the question would be “using online-video to improve english learning, is it possible yet?” i plannd to do case study or focus group with friends here, but on second thought, using internet forum as a medium may have a whole new result, who knows.however, as u said,” attendance should not be too much of a problem”. i hope your consulting work can keep connections with learners because every research wouldn’t be accomplished without researchees’ participantion. Their feedbacks are so important as raw data for analysis and findings. so, basically, we can do it. And the sencond question is “where?” Is it still the same forum but a new section, i think that will be ok. “One thing led to another”,my third question is “Is IP prevention a usual case in china, i ‘m worried about technical issue. and how is youtube and google video there, r they easy to access? last thing, recommend u sth http://www.ted.com/talks/browse, one of the most beneficial things for me, not just language, everything is gonna blows your mind.hope u like it.
oh,tell me your ideas on the co-host forum.

    5. stevenlichen Says:

Michele: I think it is a good idea to start anew for our co-hosted forum. Check out this URL: http://bbs.stevenlichen.com

Go there and register first, leave me a message here when you are done. I shall then grant you the Administrator status. And then you can start creating sections there.

When appropriate sections are designated, I will urge BeiwaiOnline students to join us; and so should you invite your research subjects to join us. :-)

It’ll be hard work for a start, but well worth the effort since this will serve as basis for your research or mine.

      I love http://www.ted.com/talks/browse, thanks a lot!

      Have a great day!

    6. stevenlichen Says:

Michele, you are now the administrator there as well :-)

Check out my message there. The online chat function will come along shortly.

    7. stevenlichen Says:

      Michele,

Here in China it’s almost bedtime, so I will get the online chatting functionality on when I get up tomorrow morning.

If you are not comfortable with all the settings and stuff, you can just leave that work to me. But, as you pointed out before, the sections on my other forums are not appropriately designated. Thus, what I need is a list of sections. Please compose one with “category title — Forum title — Forum description” and post the list here.

Since we are starting anew, the only thing I’d like to transfer from the old forum is the participant, nothing more Wink

Of cause, valuable posts can be transferred over here.

    8. stevenlichen Says:

Michele, very nice list, I’ll start creating the sections :D

Please be noted that I am invited to my friend’s wedding ceremony this evening. Chances are that they will ring me at any minute and I should be leaving.

That said, I might postpone the job till tomorrow, please just make sure you check back within 24 hours and everything will be in position :)

      Cheers!

    9. stevenlichen Says:

      Hello Michele,

Frankly, to integrate a chatting room into this forum platform is tougher than I thought, so, after cracking my brain really hard –

I’ve decided to get hosted again!

check out this forum, it has amazing functionalities. http://www.freepowerboards.com/tesol/

I modified the structure to match the one you suggested.

I’m afraid you need to register again so that I can set you as the administrator there.

Another beauty of having such a hosted service is the reaction speed, it’s pretty impressive to have such fast service while operating it in China!

So, as soon as you join there, we’ll be ready to go!

Bring your research subjects or friends there, Michele. I’ve already sent mails to people I know.

Looking forward to working with you there :-)

      Dear stevenlichen:

I have written an article , with the hope to share it with you. If you find some
mistakes, please fell free to figure it out.

Last night, I recalled my memory of last five years.I am a forgetful person, it is quite easy for me to forget what happened, but I have been thinking that it is worthy to record some special days of my life, at least, when i am too old to see the outside world, I can settle down to see my history of life throught reading these written materials. Then last night ,I spent about 4 hours to recall my memory of last 5 years, and according to the sequence of time, I noted some meaningful days and interesting things. To be frank, it was a really hard job. As I mentioned above, i am quite forgetful, thanks to the pictures I had taken and the internet. But how did I take advantage of them, may be the question puzzled you all. Take it easy, i will tell you in no time.

In my memoirs, I focused on my working experience, the places Ihad travelled, and some special days in my life. In terms of working experience, I had no much trouble to recall. When it turned to travelling, I managed to search for the photoes in my computer, wherever i travels, i’d like to take pictures. I was excited to discover that each photo followed by date. In the last five years,
i have migrated to many cities for business and other reasons. I even
wanted to record the place of every city i once lived, it was a really
challenge to recall all of these information, then I made greatly use of
the Internet. For instant, in shenzhen, i moved twice, I could hardly say the exact position of my second rent house, choosing find the answer through Internet seemed to be advisable, becasue I could figured out its nearby buildings. Finally i did it successfully. To a woman, she will never forget some special days, such as the first time she receives roses, her wedding day and etc, this principle also applys to me.

It is painful for a man without history, we should remeber our past, taking some advice from our history, sharing the happy moments in the gone days, looking forward to our future on the basis of our past and current time. So taking notes of your own story is wise and acceptable. Why not have a try? Action now!

    11. stevenlichen Says:

      Dear Hmy,

Thanks for the message. here’s the re-write:

      ——————————–

Last night, I recalled from memory what happened to me in the last 5 years. A forgetful person myself, I easily forget what has happened to me. Then I thought it might not be a bad idea if I could record what happened to me on my happier days, so when I grow older, I have something to go back to on record.

I put that into action last night, shifting through 5 years of memory to put down in sequence the more meaningful days and interesting things. Frankly, this is not an easy task for a forgetful person like me. Fortunately, with due thanks going to both the photos I have filed on computer and internet technology, I was able to piece the stories together. Let me explain to you now how it worked.

In this reconstructed memoir, I focused on my career history, the places I visited and some special days in my life. There is no difficulty at all tracking my career history. When it comes to the places I have traveled to, I look up the photos I filed in my computer and bingo with the date stamp of the digital camera, it’s a piece of cake.

During those 5 years, I have settled in different cities for business and other reasons. I attempt to record the places in those cities I have lived in but I can do so only with the help of information on the internet. I had settled in Shenzhen twice and but have difficulty saying exactly where I had lived so I tried to identify those places by searching for the more well known buildings nearby. A woman is remarkable in remembering certain special days in her life like the day she received roses for the first time, wedding day etc. That doesn’t work for me.

A man without any recallable past should feel shameful as he could not borrow from his past or recall the happy moments of bygone days. We should look back on our old and present days to project our future. So, taking notes of our own daily encounters is a wise way to back up our memory. Why don’t you give it a go? Act now!
