Like all Dads, my father sometimes seemed to be practicing for a world’s most boring man competition. He used to have the habit, when I was a boy, of identifying and reporting the state of origin of all the other cars on any highway we happened to be travelling along.

In America, as I expect you know, each state issues its own number plates, so you can tell at a glance where another car is from, which enabled my father to make observations like, ‘Hey, another car from Wyoming. That’s three this morning.’ Or: ‘Mississippi. Wonder what he’s doing up here?’ Then he would look around hopefully to see if anyone wanted to add a comment, but no one ever did. He could go on like that all day, and often did.

University authorities are aware of the pressure facing students and offer help through events, such as the Students’ Psychological Health Festival pictured here at Beijing Normal University.

A bouquet of white flowers resting at the foot of a dormitory building in the Renmin University of China carries the grief of students mourning the precious life of one of their dear friends.

At noon, on May 16, a young woman committed suicide by jumping off the 11th floor of the building. So far, university authorities have not revealed her identity. Local media believe she was a doctorate student from the literature school preparing her graduation thesis.

Regular Webware readers who have been playing around with Facebook’s new platform will likely recognize many of the sites and services that are offering their own applications. At almost 90 apps (and growing) there are a lot to choose from. After spending the better part of a day experimenting with many of them, I’ve chosen five of my personal favorites that I think people are bound to use, and come back to in the long haul because they’re useful, and that’s ultimately what makes repeat users.
